Special Offers!
This week during its 14th annual conference - the 2009 Risk Management and Finance Summit for Nonprofits hosted by TANO - the Nonprofit Risk Management Center released two brand-new online tools for nonprofit leaders. The first tool, found at www.MyRiskManagementPolicies.org is an easy-to-use program that allows you to create clear, concise, and customized risk management policies to meet the needs of your nonprofit organization. The tool was developed to help leaders avoid the mistake of using ill-suited policies found online or borrowed from other organizations. Creating practical policies that are unique to your nonprofit is an important component of risk management. But instead of effectively managing risk, leaders who "borrow" the policies of another nonprofit may actually increase their exposure to loss by adopting a policy that is beyond the reach of their nonprofit. Using a policy designed for a larger or substantially different nonprofit can expose a nonprofit to liability when the organization is unable to follow the policy to a "T." The one-time cost of the new tool is $179. TANO members receive a discount. Contact mbharrington@tano.org for details. TANO Partners with Nonprofit Quarterly
In a few weeks, the " Nonprofit Quarterly," a leading publication on nonprofit management, will be sending a special, one-time subscription offer to members of TANO. While members may subscribe year-round at the discounted price of $39 ($10 off the regular price), for a few weeks only the " Nonprofit Quarterly" is doubling this discount and will be offered for $29. The offer is time-sensitive, so be sure to send your order in -- either online at www.NPQmag.org or using the supplied envelope -- by the included deadline. The code will be on the printed mailing piece, and isn't available yet on the website. To find out if your organization is a member of TANO or for more information, contact mbharrington@tano.org or 972-839-9960. |

Risk Management Webinar: Volunteer Protection Act
Wednesday, October 7 More than 10 years have lapsed since the passage of the Volunteer Protection Act, the federal law that was intended to remove the fear of liability from the hearts of nonprofit volunteers. This webinar will explore the landscape of volunteering since the passage of this law. During the webinar we'll take a look at cases citing the Volunteer Protection Act and try to discern a pattern in the ways that courts have applied the law to insulate volunteers from liability. Explore the lessons from this legislation and learn how to leverage those lessons into effective volunteer management practices at your nonprofit. Details and register at http://www.tano.org/en/art/880/
FREE Webinar: Starting a Nonprofit - Tuesday 13-Oct-09 Nonprofit organizations are different than businesses and government; not better or worse, but different. These differences should not be glossed over as you explore whether the creation of a nonprofit is the best way to achieve the goals or purposes you seek to achieve. You should understand what it means to be a nonprofit and how that differs from being a for-profit before you start the paperwork process. You can complete the entire process yourself if you are prepared to go through the learning curve or engage the services of someone with expertise in forming, leading, managing and governing nonprofits. While it may be useful to engage the services of a lawyer for complicated situations, the average experience may not require a lawyer - just someone with solid experience in the nonprofit sector. Details and register at http://www.tano.org/en/cev/753
